Personal Protective Equipment – Planning for the Future

06/09/2020 Written by: Peggy Morrison, MSN, RN, BC, CEAL, WCC, QCP

Response to the novel coronavirus has increased demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during a time when supply chain interruptions are occurring across the nation, affecting both acute and senior living healthcare providers. As the number of persons infected with COVID-19 has continued to rise, and as states begin to open for business, the demand for PPE will continue to increase, further impacting an already weakened supply chain.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recommended that healthcare facilities consider stockpiling sufficient Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to allow for continuity of operations during a pandemic. Due to use by many healthcare organizations of a "just-in-time" inventory system, stockpiling these items now and increasing par levels is the best method to ensure that your community will have the necessary PPE available in the event of a large-scale patient surge.
Senior living communities play a critical role in controlling the impact of an infectious disease outbreak or pandemic. Stockpiling of PPE and other necessary supplies is an important step toward being prepared to respond quickly.
In an effort to assist healthcare providers in establishing how quickly Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are being used in their respective organizations, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has provided a ‘Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Burn Rate Calculator’ spreadsheet which may be accessed here. Use of the calculator will assist your organization in making order projections related to future needs.
